Determining the right size of safe is an important consideration before you buy. To start, take an inventory of the quantity, size and the value of each item you wish to protect. Add it all up and you’ll have a pretty good idea of the size of safe and level of security needed. The total cost of those valuables most likely will far out-weigh the cost of even the most expensive full-sized home/office safes on the market today.
A central location to collect valuables is another benefit to owning a safe at home/office. Cash, plane tickets, deeds, certificates, photo albums, journals and even Christmas presents are stored in safes to help keep track of valuables and provide personal privacy. A home/office safe is better than a dozen hiding places throughout the house. Just think, no more guesswork as to where you put something.
Many previous buyers have found they bought “too small” the first time around and ended up in need of a larger model to accommodate growing collections, either from their own or from other family members. But the solution has been quite simple—buy a second his or her model!

The size and color of the safe may depend upon where you want it installed. Installation locations range from family rooms to bedrooms and from garages to closets. The beauty of these safes are painted in a variety of high gloss colors with classy detailing to match any décor. A durable granite textured finish is also available for owners who want a more rugged look with the same top-notch security.
Outside the home/office setting, many businesses are turning to security safes to meet their security needs. Whether in an uptown office or in a private business setting at home/office, the safe’s ability to improve security during and after work hours helps relieve management stress over potential theft, including internal theft.

Electronic locks with multiple user codes and monitoring capabilities are available when there are more employees or family members who need access to the safe.

Whether for a business setting or home/office, manufacturers offer adjustable interiors to fit a wide variety of items. Flexible interiors even allow for taller valuables, such as archery equipment, rare Samurai swords, expensive fishing rods or long firearms, accommodating both length and quantity. Internal lighting is available on higher end models to illuminate the interior when the door is opened. Other accessories items such as felt lined oak drawers, filing cabinets and document storage safes are available to organize valuables.

With the limitless possibilities to store valuables, it is nice to know manufacturers offer home/office safes in a variety of sizes, styles, colors, flexible interiors and accessories to meet any specific need.
As you begin to shop around, you will notice a wide range of products available, especially when viewing catalogs. Many retailers begin by offering storage cabinets with a key lock. Don’t be trapped into thinking a cabinet is all you need just to keep your valuables away from the kids. While cabinets can keep an inquisitive youngster at bay, it would only take several minutes for a thief to claim your possessions. Plus, if you desire fire protection, nearly all cabinets do not include fire protection. To know if it has fire protection, simply thump the side of any cabinet with your hand (not so hard that you dent it). If it has a hollow sound, it doesn’t have fire protection.

The number of retailers carrying residential security or gun safes is expanding rapidly because of the growing demand. You can find a variety of models and brands at safe outlets, sporting goods stores, locksmiths and mass merchant retailers across the country. The market is even growing internationally. You may have noticed an increase in advertisements by manufacturers and retailers emphasizing the importance of security and the protection of valuables by purchasing a residential security or gun safe.

You’d think they were expensive when you look at the beautiful paint job and detailing. To the contrary, residential security or gun safes are quite affordable. Prices range from $400 for the smaller home/office sized models up to $5,000 for the highest fire rated, heaviest and secure 24-karat gold models. The most popular size is 60” tall by 30” wide, retailing between $1,000 and $2,500, depending upon the features.

Many safe dealers offer delivery and in-home/office service and installation while other retailers let you save the money by hauling it yourself in the back of a pickup truck. Delivery charges range from $100 to $500, depending upon the weight of the safe, distance you live from the dealer and whether there are any stairs or special delivery requirements to protect floors, remove doors, etc.

Once you get your new safe installed, your comfort level of protection will increase knowing you’ve made an investment in protecting your future. Buying a safe means now you’ll have 24-hour in-home/office convenience and easy access to your valuables and no monthly expenses. Having important valuables close at hand compliments privacy to ensure security of precious keepsakes you prefer others not know about. Just think, no more security checks, keys to keep track of or restricted banking hours. With a safe, you can get what you want, when you need it.

There are a lot of uncertainties in our world today, but one thing is for sure. Owning your own safe can buy you more time and help you to relax when you need it most—whether at home, at work, or on vacation.

Now that’s peace of mind.

Theft Protection 101

If a thief considers an attempted break-in on a safe, they must consider the high gloss finish – perfect for finger print identification. Some thieves consider removing the safe to give them more time to break in but most residential security or gun safes are too heavy. Buyers nearly always utilize the predrilled holes for bolt-down security, making the safe virtually impossible to move or be tipped over in disgust by the thief (because he’s mad you own a safe and he can’t get in).

You should look for the safes that have passed actual break-in tests by professional safe crackers if you want to buy more time. Underwriter’s Laboratory (UL) hires experienced safe crackers to test the security resistance of residential security or gun safe and commercial safes. To receive their Residential Security Rating, a residential security or gun safe must pass four stringent tests. Three attacks are performed to the door, locking mechanism and handle using just about every conceivable method of drilling, chiseling, punching and prying. A fourth and final attempt is to drill, punch and pry through the sidewall of the safe. UL even creates an advantage by determining the attack points before any attempt begins or the clock starts ticking. If the safe passes all four timed tests, the manufacturer’s safe is certified.

While the safe-testing industry has certified ratings for residential security or gun and commercial safes, buyers should understand that given enough time any safe can be defeated, even the most sophisticated bank vault.

The objective of manufacturers is to produce residential security or gun safe with as many security defenses as needed to discourage or delay thieves for as long as possible. Residential security or gun safes today provide an excellent defensive barrier.

There are many factors in building security into a residential security or gun safe . The number one location for attempted assaults to a safe are on the door. As a primary defense tool, manufacturers install layers of hardplate behind the door’s combination, which protects the safes lock and locking mechanism from drilling. Top of the line models go further by installing ball bearings in the hardplates, virtually eliminating entry by chewing up or breaking drill bits.

If by chance entry is made through the hard plate, additional security measures are installed in the lock itself to prevent break-ins. Both mechanical and electronic locks have relockers built into them, which is a trigger mechanism that freezes the safe’s mechanism when the lock is drilled, punched or torched. Most UL listed locks include at least one relocker, sometimes more. The most reputable and widely known lock manufacturer used by safe companies is Sargent & Greenleaf. Other manufacturers include LaGuard and Ilco.

To protect against punching out the lock’s tumblers (which releases the locking bolt), manufacturers install additional, yet separate relockers. If the back plate of the lock is knocked off, it releases a spring-loaded trigger mechanism, much like a mousetrap. This additional insurance is an extra measure to ensure the safe’s cam and bolts stay locked tight.

A more sophisticated “remote” relocker system is found in higher end models. They are strategically installed away from the locking mechanism entirely, yet triggered from a security breach to the lock. Simply put, if the combination lock were completely cut out of the door, the remote relocker would engage and lock up the bolts. The remote relocker security feature is enhanced when attached to the best of all systems—A glass relocker. Commercial grade tempered glass replaces the traditional hardplate in front of the lock. When drilling commences, the glass shatters on impact, triggering and engaging the relocker. Thieves are known to curse and throw down their tools in disgust when they hear this relocker fire.

Owning a residential security or gun safe doesn’t eliminate unpredictable events from happening, but they can help to avoid serious consequences when threatening circumstances arise.. It’s never too late to begin preparations for security.

There have been many home and business owners who bought full-sized residential security or gun safes before any unforeseen break-in occurred. Hundreds of residential security or gun safe buyers have found their safe purchases protected their valuables from would-be-thieves even after they broke into their home/office. You can imagine the owner’s relief as they open their safe door to find everything secure and in its place. These testimonials turn full-size safe buyers into salespeople, recommending to their friends and relatives to not leave their home or office without one.

A depository is a facility where things can be deposited for storage or safekeeping. Therefore a depository safe is a safe where items can be deposited for storage or safekeeping. They are usually used in a business setting versus a residential setting, because usually what is being dropped into the safe is cash, or other important paperwork. The depository safes are made with three types of openings.

The first type of opening on a depository safe is a front load, mailbox type opening, which is for dropping deposits from cash registers or business dealings. This is called a depository or drop safe. The door on this type of safe usually pulls down or out from the front of the safe and the deposit is dropped into the door and the door is closed. The object that has been deposited drops into the safe. The deposit drops past a baffle (which should be present to keep thieves from “fishing” anything out of the safe). It can drop into the safe itself or it can drop into an inner compartment that locks with a key or other type of lock. When a separate locking compartment is included in a safe, you can leave change or other items needed by your staff on an ongoing basis and not be worried about them getting their hands on the deposits.

A safe that has an opening (called a hopper) that rotates with a handle on the top of the safe, and drops the deposit into the safe, is called a rotary hopper safe. This type of safe usually is manufactured with one or two separate doors. When the safe has two doors, the top section catches the deposit and the bottom is for the change or additional items needed for your employees’ convenience during the day. Again your employees’ do not have access to the deposits if you have a two door safe.

The last type of safe has an opening on the side opposite to the locking door, this is usually a slot or can be a drop. You mount the safe through the wall so the actual safe is inside an office, locked up, and the deposit is made from outside the office through the wall. These are called reverse depository safes.
They are found in many sizes and can accommodate a large amount of drops or a small amount of drops. If you have questions as to what is right for your business. Give us a call at (818) 997-1234, and we will be happy to help you make the important decision of what size and type of depository safe you need.

Have you noticed credit card charges on your statement that don’t look familiar? You might be a victim of identity theft. The Federal Trade Commission estimates that as many as nine million Americans have their identities stolen each year. Don’t be a victim as its cost is emotional distress and your time. You must be careful how you keep and discard of your personal records. With a paper shredder you could save your credit and your peace of mind.

Identity Theft occurs in one of the following ways:

Phishing for credit card information, Social Security Numbers, account numbers, or other personal information on the internet by emails, or by phone by people posing as a representative from a company you do business with.

Stealing documents, by breaking into your home or office, that give this information to the thief.

Digging through your trash for credit card, loan or refinance offers which the thief can fill out and send in using your name and changing the address. They also look for bills and other items that they can use.

By calling or approaching you impersonating a government, bank or other authority figure to pressure you into giving information to a third party by phone, such as credit card numbers, birth date, or social security number.

Paper shredders will give the burglar no chance to get his hands on the information that he needs. By shredding all important papers and even the junk mail you receive, all the thief will find in your trash can are banana peels and milk cartons. If you have records that need to be protected from a burglar, you are welcome to let us help you purchase a safe that is right for you. But keep your important documents and junk mail out of the hands of the trash diggers in your neighborhood, by browsing our new line of paper shredders.
